Reflection Blog Post

COM 210 was an enjoyable class.  It was one that sparked interests that I did not know I had and taught me new ideas and ways to navigate the skills that I already held.  My favorite project this year was the Illustrator project.  I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to use this program and then being able to apply these concepts to my own ideas and successfully execute them.

The concepts I have learned throughout COM 210 will carry me through life and through my career.  I learned many new skills throughout this class including how to use Illustrator, Premiere and improved on my prior knowledge of Photoshop. These skills will carry me through my goal to work in the Social Media world, whether it be managing a website or aiding in the creation of a social media platform.

COM 210 taught me a lot about programs that I had little to no knowledge of prior to the class, although I do wish that I had learned more about the use of all Adobe Creative Cloud projects as a whole and what each is usually used for in the real world.  I also wish that we had one some work with Lightroom, as this program can be used for many different purposes.

I used many resources throughout this class in order to better my understanding of each program.  Many included the use of Google or those who use these programs in their daily life.  I did not find any particular website to be specifically helpful but rather used a variety of sources to aid my understanding of each program.

COM 210 is a class that is unique and able to bring light to programs that one will need in the future.  It is a class that will stay with one throughout their careers whether it be educational or in one’s career.  COM 210 is a beneficial class that will aid one in the future in more ways than one.

Final Premiere Video

Working out is not a new craze within our society but its focus has been heightened recently.  It has become popular for people to be active and to stay fit.  It has even carried over to social media.  For this project, I made an inspirational video about working out.  I focused on the idea that working out is good for you and can better ones mental and physical health I did this by focusing on the idea of the outdoors.  I focused on my idea “Get Moving and Get Outside”.

For years working out and staying active has been something that many strive for.  As a result, many companies try to focus on this idea and the idea of bettering the existence of their company while also helping the planet. Many companies do this through inspirational commercials.  This is what inspired me.  I tried to create an inspirational video that embodied the idea that working out and getting active can be done in a fun way.  I tried to make my video as similar to a Nike ad or any sports ad that strives to inspire.  I chose to include shots of nature, showing how getting active can happen anywhere, while also showing a more typical way of getting active.  I made use of the aspect ratio, establishing shot and montage.

I started making my video by collecting my videos of nature and past hikes that I had been on.  In the past few months and weeks I had been collecting videos and pictures of the nature and activities that I had done and made sure to capture the moment when I did do something outside. I then shot videos of my brother working out.  I started by putting these into Premiere and organizing the content in a concise way that would make sense in the context of my story and vision for my project.  I then added the transitions, titles and music in the background.  I ran into many problems with the ukulele music but was able to work through trial and error.

In my final draft video, I made some changes and attempted many. In my feedback many said that my video was good and did not need much tweaking, except for the audio.  I attempted to change the audio many times but was unsuccessful.  The audio continued to sound like it was echoing despite where I recorded the footage. I did the best I could in order to fix this but was unsuccessful.  I tried to put filters on it using premiere, but nothing seemed to change. I did change the video of my friend hitting softballs to my brother working out, as I felt this fit the theme in a more accurate manner.  I made the revisions I could and to the best of my ability.

All videos and photos were shot by me.

Final Audio story

My idea for this project was a one-time podcast or audio story time that would discuss the effect that one’s environment has on working out.  I looked at this specifically through a college student and the effect of their environment on their physical activity.

This relates to my topic by discussing the idea that nature has an influence on someone’s drive to work out.  Nature is an influence on one’s physical activity, this can have an effect when one is deprived of this aspect in their daily life.

The idea of a podcast had a great influence over my idea for my audio story.  Podcasts have a very casual tone to them and thus I thought this would add an element of honesty into my audio story.

I have recently been listening to a wide variety of podcasts and thus have influenced my ideas for my audio story.  The podcast gives an honest idea to the concept that nature has an effect on one’s will to engage in physical activity.

In order to create my audio story, I interviewed people on how nature is an influence on one’s physical activity.  I asked questions specifically about their involvement in sports before college.  I asked questions such as  “Do you consider yourself physically active?, Do you work out or do any type of physical activity regularly?, Did you play sports in high school?, Do you think that the college environment we are surrounded by has an effect on your physical activity now?, and, Do you think our natural environment that surrounds us has an effect on this?”

After I interviewed those who were able to answer the questions in an honest manner, I then uploaded the interview to Audition.  Once I did this, I was able to edit the background noise out and to make the interview as smooth as possible.  I cut out the unneeded phrases that made the interview informal and choppy.  Once this was done, I edited the Free to use music and was able to manipulate it to sound as an intro and outro to my one-time podcast. The only advice that I wish I would have known before recording would be to always record in a quite space that is not distracting, whether this be the narration or the actual interview.

The feedback I received was to edit the interview and to add an introduction. I struggled with this and was able to make some changes but was not able to completely add an introduction as the time constraint prevented me from doing so. I was only able to make little edits due to the time restriction.

My idea for the Audio story assignment is a one time podcast in which I acknowledge the effects of environment and past on working out today in relation to college and its environment.

Final Logo Project

The theme for my projects throughout this semester is to focus around inspiring and working out.  In my logo project I chose to focus on one thing, Nature.  Nature is ever inspiring, as it is ever changing and adapting.  Humans are the same in which we are always striving to be better and to do better in addition to adapting to events that occur in our lives.  In light of this, many choose to recharge themselves by spending time outside or going to work out.  I chose to focus on this for my logo protect and link these two ideas together by creating the slogan “Get Outside, Get Moving”.

In order to come up with this idea I chose to look at stickers that focused on the Pacific Northwest and the outdoors in general. This allowed me to come up with this idea and to translate it into a logo that fit with my topic.  In order to form the idea of my logo, I did research.  I looked at what makes a logo important and relevant and how it allows the company to shine through it. This is when I came up with the idea of “Get Outside, Get Moving”. I then focused on the idea of scalability, shape and color.  In this I was able to execute my idea for the slogan and come up with a logo that matched it.

In order to create my logo, I made use of the Illustrator tutorials that we had previously learned.  I specifically drew from the Pencil illustration and the Banner design tutorials. In order to create my logo, I made use of line segment tool and the type tool.  I started my design by creating lines in order to make the diamond outline of my logo.  I then created the lines at the bottom of the logo to make it have some texture and to make appear to seem as though there were paths or a ground of some sort. This allowed for perspective.  I then created the mountain like outlines using the line segment tool again.  I then implemented my slogan with the type tool.  Once I was able to manipulate this in the area that I desired, I added a green colored gradient to all but the mountains in order to have the logo appear as close to a representation of nature as possible.  I did the same for the bottom of the logo but then reversed the lines, so the color was inside the lined area.  I did not receive much feedback beside the idea to get rid of a black dot that I had previously between the words “Get Outside”. In addition to changing this I edited the words and made them the same font.  The only recommendation that I have to others is to give yourself time, as many mistakes can be made when rushing through Illustrator.
